CCIM+ Summer Workshops
Looking for a summer workshop experience that can help you develop new skills, make new friends and find new passions within a media, communications, technology or storytelling field? Look no further! Ball State’s CCIM+ Summer Workshops is a robust summer experience for high school students looking to become better leaders, writers, storytellers, designers, editors, photographers, video editors and more! No prior experience necessary.

BALL STATE’S COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, INFORMATION, AND MEDIA is excited to offer one of the most affordable summer workshops in the country thanks to the Indiana Youth Programs on Campus (IYPC) Lilly Foundation grant. Our workshops provide high school students an opportunity to learn and grow their knowledge and skills as journalists, media producers, esports players and speech communicators while learning about college and career opportunities at Ball State and beyond. First generation college students, 21st Century Scholars and students who qualify for free/reduced lunch may apply for an additional scholarship that would cover even more of the low registration fee.
WORKSHOP COURSE OPTIONS

Whether you’re on yearbook, print, web, broadcast, sports media, or social media teams, this workshop is your chance to reset and get ahead for next school year. With guidance from experienced student media advisers and helpful resources, student media staffs can step away from deadlines to focus on their goals and ideas. You choose what to work on, leaving you more confident and ready for the year ahead. This retreat works best when two or more students from the same staff attend, and advisers are welcome too!

Reimagine your role as a leader by putting People Over Product. In this course, student leaders across all platforms — yearbook, newspaper, broadcast, and online — will learn to practice servant leadership, build self-confidence, and create a staff culture where failure is a steppingstone toward growth. We will explore how to motivate peers and cultivate resilient teams through improved communication and innovative workflow efficiencies. After exploring best practices, students will choose and develop a practical project tailored to their specific program’s needs. You will leave with the "why," the "how," and a concrete plan to set your staff up for success next school year.

Strategy is everything. Without a good strategy, things tend to fail. In this hands-on workshop, we will define your student media’s purpose, assess the landscape, and create a clear, actionable plan to achieve your goals. We will focus on branding, credibility, audience/community engagement and proactive storytelling that fosters personal connection to boosts readership.

Get ready to rethink how you create and collaborate! Design Thinking for Student Media is a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to use the same creative problem-solving process that innovators and designers rely on every day. You’ll explore how to understand your audience, brainstorm bold ideas, test new approaches, and bring them to life in your own publication. By the end, you’ll walk away with the tools and the confidence to use design thinking to level up your yearbook, newspaper, broadcast or social media game and create stories that grab attention, spark conversation, and truly reflect the spirit of your school.

Yearbook 101 introduces students to the fundamentals of scholastic journalism and yearbook production. Students will learn and explore yearbook terminology, journalistic ethics, interviewing, writing, photography, design, theme and teamwork while producing content and building relationships that support the creation of a successful yearbook.

A successful yearbook theme encapsulates the essence of the school year in an honest and creative way. In this workshop, students will focus on brainstorming unique school-year narratives through structured activities, analyzing trends, and selecting a cohesive verbal-visual concept. Key steps include identifying the year’s defining moments, brainstorming phrase variations, and planning consistent design elements such as typography and color schemes, across all sections.

This crash-course in journalistic writing will take participants through the core essentials of journalistic reporting — from understanding the basic elements of news to discussing and practicing information-gathering skills to writing solid inverted pyramid and angle-based narrative stories to editing. These skills create the foundation for all other components of journalistic storytelling.

Do you love sports and everything surrounding athletic competition? Do you love asking questions, analyzing stats and the writing, reporting and editing process? This course will broaden your scope of what it means to be a sports journalist in today’s modern era of technology, social media and information delivery. Students will learn how to research, identify, interview and tell the story of the game using multiple tools and platforms.

This course will explore how multimedia storytelling can challenge norms, amplify community voices and inspire action. Through ethical reporting and dynamic interviews, students will learn how to write and produce stories covering the pressing issues of the day. By publishing on platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, students will develop modern day storytelling techniques that raise awareness and strengthen connections among people.

Media Design & Graphics will cover the skills needed to produce visual content for both print and digital media. Students will use programs within the Adobe Suite to learn the principles of graphic design, layout, typography, and visual storytelling. Students will design graphics, illustrations, and page layouts for various mediums using tutorials and independent exploration. No design experience is needed and those with design experience will be challenged to rethink the vision of their publication for a new school year.

Taking a photo is more than the click of a button. We will focus on how to capture your school and student body and tell their story. This summer, we will explore composition, lighting, and editing for beginning and advanced photographers. In this workshop, we will discuss ethics, staff organization and coverage, and leadership. You will learn editing in both Photoshop and Lightroom. Bring a camera and be ready to shoot. On-site photo assignments will create conversation, critique, and community.

At Ball State Sports Link, we capture an endless amount of footage and sound of Ball State’s athletic programs. How do we get the most out of it? From storytelling to ESPN broadcasts, Ball State creatives will teach you how to plan, capture, produce, log and use footage across all media platforms, producing compelling and impactful video stories that inform, inspire and entertain audiences.

Ever wonder how movies create impossible worlds? In this workshop, students will step behind the scenes of post-production by filming on a green screen, experimenting with simple node-based compositing, and editing in Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve. By the end of the workshop, students will transform their own footage into visually enhanced scenes using professional post-production tools.

In this class, students will learn how esports use science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) to deliver, create and play esport games. Students will learn about gaming technology and safety, game build, esports production and graphics, livestreaming and gaming technique and strategy. This workshop culminates in an esports tournament with prizes and bragging rights!

Learn new skills, make new friends and find new passions at Ball State’s Summer Speech Camp! With 24 Speech State Championships, Ball State offers one of the most engaging workshop experiences for high school students looking to grow and improve in public speaking and oral interpretation. In this workshop, students will research, evaluate, organize, craft, practice and deliver a variety of speeches from informative to persuasive to interpretation and extemporaneous. Students will learn speech preparation, performance, and competition strategies that are sure to improve their artistry.

CCIM+ Summer Workshops is an in-person, residential or commuter summer workshop experience for high school students (including incoming Ball State freshmen) seeking to develop new skills as journalists, media producers, esports players and speech communicators. Held on the beautiful campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, workshop participants will utilize the same state-of-the-art facilities, classrooms and technology that our degree-seeking students use.

Any high school student who has an interest in learning or expanding their knowledge and experience as storytellers, media content producers or designers. Some classes have capacities of around 20, so be sure to register early to secure you spot in the class you want!

Thanks to funding support from the Indiana Youth Program on Campus Lilly Foundation grant, we are able to offer one of the most affordable journalism, media, esports and speech communication workshops in the country.
4-Day Residential: $375
4-Day Commuter: $300DEPOSIT: A non-refundable $75 deposit is due upon registration. This deposit secures your spot in the workshop. Full payment is due no later than May 15.
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT: Register and pay the deposit by April 1 to receive a 10% discount.
SCHOOL PAYMENTS: Schools may pay a portion or all of the costs for student attendance with a P.O.
REFUNDS: Refunds may be provided (minus the $75 deposit) up to May 15. After that date, refund requests will not be honored.
Payment Options: Credit card /personal check / school check. Credit card payments will incur an additional 3% processing fee.

Our residential workshop participants will stay in one of Ball State’s new or updated residence halls. Residence halls are air conditioned and feature semi-private bathrooms (pods shared by a small number of rooms). Each room is equipped with a bed, desk and dresser. Participants must bring their own bedding, toiletries, shower towel and luxury items. All residence halls are located within close proximity of a dining hall with numerous food options, including the ever-loved Chick-fil-A and Starbucks.
Students will receive a meal card to use throughout the workshop. They are allotted $6 for breakfast and $10 each for lunch and dinner. If students spend more than these amounts, they will have to pay the difference in cash or by debit/credit card.
Students are welcome to bring snacks to the workshop as well. Pro Tip: Use your own refillable bottle for discounted fountain drinks in university dining facilities. Water refills are always free!

Every minute of the workshop is planned (schedule forthcoming). Attendance is taken during each class session. There are rules and curfews that all student participants must follow. Resident Assistants periodically check-in with our student participants at the dorm to ensure they are accounted for and safe.

We have a limited number of scholarships available for Indiana resident students to attend our CCIM+ Summer Workshops. Applicants will be notified of any scholarship award on a rolling basis through May 15. Scholarships will range from $150-$300. To apply, write a 300-500-word narrative and paste it into your registration form explaining the financial challenges you face and how a scholarship to attend our summer workshops would benefit you both financially and intellectually.

All students, teachers and chaperones are to follow local, state, and federal laws while attending workshops.
Residence Hall floor/room curfew is 11 p.m.
Students are not to enter the Village, other residence halls or surrounding neighborhood houses during workshops.
Opposite genders are not permitted to be on the same floor of the residence halls.
Students will not operate their motor vehicles while at the workshop, nor can they ride in or on anyone else's personal vehicle while at workshops. This includes the use of electric scooters and other mechanical modes of transportation.
This is a workshop and students are expected to complete assignments under given deadlines.
CCIM Outreach and its employees may take photos during workshops to post on social media. Photos inside dorm rooms, bathrooms, etc. where privacy is expected will not be taken or posted. Student names will not be used.
Smoking/vaping/tobacco use is prohibited during workshops.
The use of drugs and alcohol is strictly forbidden.
Students are expected to attend all sessions, unless sick. In such case, students must contact their RA or report directly to the CCIM Outreach office in LB 104 immediately.
State and federal law prohibits students from tampering with fire alarms, safety, or security equipment.
Horseplay, including excessive noise, removing window screens, and throwing items from windows, is strictly prohibited.
Parents are responsible for any financial restitution owed to the university for property damage or lost dorm room keys.
If students have/bring a smart phone to workshops, they will be asked to join a free "Group Me" messaging app that allows workshop leaders to send reminder messages to students about the daily schedule and events. This is a one-way communication -- students are not able to respond or send their own messages.
In case of an emergency, students may receive individual text messages from workshop leadership (e.g. if a student is late or absent from class).
Students are representatives of their schools and should act in accordance with all school rules and policies.
Bullying of any kind, e.g. physical, verbal, emotional, cyber, etc., is strictly prohibited.
Students may be dismissed from the Workshop if they are found violating any of the workshop policies.
In the event of dismissal, parents will be notified to pick up their child immediately (regardless of the time of day or night) and refunds will not be given.
