CCIM+ Summer Workshops

Ball State’s CCIM+ Summer Workshops is a robust summer experience for middle and high school students looking to become better leaders, writers, storytellers, designers, editors, photographers, videographers and more! 3-DAY WORKSHOP

COURSE OPTIONS

  • No matter what student media program you are a part of, this course provides you with the time and resources needed to make plans and set goals for next school year. This workshop works best when there are two or more students from the same school student media staff to collaborate. Student media advisers are encouraged to attend too! Participants will have the option to attend multiple breakout sessions on yearbook theme development, media design trends, staff management, audience engagement, and more!

  • In this course from our nationally-recognized Sports Link program, combine your passion for digital media creativity with your love for sports. You will learn to use innovative technology to create sports content for distribution across multiple platforms.

  • Writing, editing, design, photography — this course does it all. Whether you are a returning staff member or a beginner, Ball State’s yearbook class will provide you with the knowledge needed to create a top-notch yearbook your student body will love.

  • Telling visual stories is the backbone of information delivery. Without visuals, audiences have a hard time visualizing the depth or context of the story. In our Photographic Storytelling course, you will not only learn the technical skills of shooting and editing, but also learn about photo composition, depth of field, color correcting, cropping and resolution.

  • Do you love shooting and editing videos? Are you constantly learning new software to up your video editing skills? In our Visual Effects (VFX) workshop, you will learn how to create, animate, and manipulate objects to really up your visual editing game.

4-DAY WORKSHOP

COURSE OPTIONS

  • “You don’t need a title to be a leader.” Whether you are a returning staff member or an editor, this course will provide valuable insight, resources and tactics to help you lead and motivate others to perform their best. Topics will revolve around leadership styles and characteristics, cultivating relationships among staff and school leaders, deadline management, and developing a comprehensive staff manual. Discussions on journalism law and ethics as it pertains to scholastic media will be included.

  • Do you love learning new things? Do you often find yourself wondering how something works, why a particular decision was made, or how someone became so good at their job, sport or hobby? This workshop course will help you answer these questions using journalistic reporting foundations to write news and feature stories using emerging media technologies for a truly digital multimedia experience.

  • Strong design, across all mediums (Web, Yearbook, Newspaper), delivers powerful experiences and drives audience engagement. In this workshop course, you will leave with a command of the necessary tools and software to create dynamic story designs and graphics your school audience will love. This course will utilize the Adobe Creative Suite in addition to other online design tools.

  • Do you love sports and everything surrounding athletic competition? Do you love analyzing stats, asking questions and the writing and editing process? This course will broaden your scope of what it means to be a sports journalist and help you find and tell the story of the game using multiple tools and platforms.

  • Meet them where they’re at! Social media has become the #1 source for information delivery and entertainment among teens and young adults. As such, it is a powerful tool for connecting with your audience. Using social media analytics, research methods and trends, this course will help you execute a plan to create informative and entertaining content that is sure to grow a following.

  • With 24 consecutive state speech championships to their credit, Ball State’s speech coaches know a thing or two about what it takes to craft and deliver a good speech. This workshop (for high school students only) provides an opportunity for you to grow and learn from some of Ball State’s best in public speaking or oral interpretation. 5-DAY VIRTUAL

ESPORTS WORKSHOP

  • Only open to students going into grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 (and just-graduated seniors).

    A 5-day online esports bootcamp designed to elevate your skills in Rocket League and Valorant. Led by Ball State Esports' professional coaches, this immersive experience allows participants to gain valuable insights, master new strategies and techniques, and learn essential soft skills for both in game and out of game success.

2025 Summer Workshop FAQs

  • CCIM+ Summer Workshops is an in-person, residential or commuter summer workshop experience for middle and high school students and teachers (including incoming Ball State freshmen) seeking to develop new skills as journalists, media producers and speech communicators. Held on the beautiful campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, workshop participants will utilize the same state-of-the-art facilities, classrooms and technology that our degree-seeking students use.

  • Any middle or high school student who has an interest in learning or expanding their knowledge and experience as storytellers and media content producers or designers. Some classes are limited to middle school or high school-aged students only. Please be sure you meet the grade/age requirement before registering.

  • Our residential workshop participants will stay in one of Ball State’s new or updated residence halls. Residence halls are air conditioned and feature semi-private bathrooms (pods shared by a small number of rooms). Each room is equipped with a bed, desk and dresser. Participants must bring their own bedding, toiletries, shower towel and luxury items. All residence halls are located within close proximity of a dining hall with numerous food options, including the ever-loved Starbucks.

  • Every minute of the workshop is planned (schedule forthcoming). Attendance is taken during each class session. There are rules and curfews that all student participants must follow. Resident Assistants periodically check-in with our student participants to ensure they are accounted for and safe.

  • 3-Day Residential: $350 (includes $30 meal card)
    3-Day Commuter:
    $300 (includes $30 meal card)

    4-Day Residential: $425 (includes $50 meal card)
    4-Day Commuter: $350 (includes $50 meal card)

    5-Day Esports Virtual Bootcamp: $300

    On-campus meals average $9 per sitting. Additional meal cards are available for purchase. University dining halls also accept cash or credit/debit cards. Snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the workshops. Students are welcome to bring their own snacks from home as well. Pro Tip: Use your own refillable bottle for discounted fountain drinks in university dining facilities. Water refills are always free!

  • We have a limited number of scholarships available for students in need to attend our workshop offerings. Applicants will be notified of any scholarship award by May 23. Scholarships will cover half of the registration amount owed. To apply, please submit a 1-2 page narrative explaining the financial challenges you face and how a scholarship to attend our summer workshop would benefit you both financially and intellectually. Email your narrative to ccimoutreach@bsu.edu and type “CCIM Summer Workshops Scholarship” in the subject line. Please be sure to include the attendee’s full name, address and contact info in the body of the email. Scholarship applications must be received by May 18.

    • All students, teachers and chaperones are to follow local, state, and federal laws while attending workshops.

    • Residence Hall floor/room curfew is 11 p.m.

    • Students are not to enter the Village, other residence halls or surrounding neighborhood houses during workshops.

    • Opposite genders are not permitted to be on the same floor of the residence halls.

    • Students will not operate their motor vehicles while at the workshop or ride in or on anyone else's personal vehicle while at workshops. This includes the use of electric scooters and other mechanical modes of transportation.

    • This is a workshop and students are expected to complete assignments under given deadlines.

    • CCIM Outreach and its employees may take photos during workshops to post on social media. Photos inside dorm rooms, bathrooms, etc. where privacy is expected will not be taken or posted. Student names will not be used.

    • Smoking/vaping/tobacco use is prohibited during workshops.

    • The use of drugs and alcohol is strictly forbidden.

    • Students are expected to attend all sessions, unless sick. In such case, students must contact their RA or report directly to the CCIM Outreach office in LB 104 immediately.

    • State and federal law prohibits students from tampering with fire alarms, safety, or security equipment.

    • Horseplay, including excessive noise, removing window screens, and throwing items from windows, is strictly prohibited.

    • Parents are responsible for any financial restitution owed to the university for property damage or lost dorm room keys.

    • If students have/bring a smart phone to workshops, they will be asked to join a free "Group Me" messaging app that allows workshop leaders to send reminder messages to students about the daily schedule and events. This is a one-way communication -- students are not able to respond or send their own messages.

    • In case of an emergency, students may receive individual text messages from workshop leadership (e.g. if a student is late or absent from class).

    • Students are representatives of their schools and should act in accordance with all school rules and policies.

    • Bullying of any kind, e.g. physical, verbal, emotional, cyber, etc., is strictly prohibited.

    • Students may be dismissed from the Workshop if they are found violating any of the workshop policies.

    • In the event of dismissal, parents will be notified to pick up their child immediately (regardless of the time of day or night) and refunds will not be given.
